I Made a Pikachu Cake Using a Pancake Mold!

I bought a Pikachu pancake mold from the Pokémon Center last year and I decided to see if I could use it to make a cake. It’s a silicone mold that’s heat resistant to 450°F. It also comes with an Eevvee mold which I hope to make into a cake soon too.

It wasnt too difficult and turned out PEFECTLY! I made it for my husband who has recently gotten back into Pokemon Go. He said he loved it! yay.

I did learn a few little tricks along the way, especially when it came to the fragile Pikachu ears. You have to be careful with them!

Supplies and Things I used:

  • Pikachu silicone pancake mold
  • Lemon Duncan Hines cake mix
  • Yellow food coloring gel
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Parchment paper
  • Small offset spatula
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Candy melts for the face

How I Made the Pikachu Cake:

I had a Duncan Hines cake mix hanging around in my pantry and I thought it would be perfect for this. I made the cake mix exactly according to the directions. It wasn’t quite yellow enough, so I added 6 drops of yellow food color gel to get the Pikachu yellow. Just stir it into the entire bowl of batter. Btw… there was leftover batter so you could also make some cupcakes to go with it.

I lined a baking pan with parchment paper, placed the silicone mold on top, and sprayed the mold with nonstick cooking spray. The mold is non-stick but I accidentally overfilled the first one and it got stuck, so I started spraying it from then on.

Then I added about 1/3 cup of batter to the mold. I used a small offset spatula to spread the batter into all the little areas. It seems like not enough, but it was!

I baked each cake at 325°F for about 8 minutes. I made three layers in total. Since I only have one mold, I baked them one at a time. It went pretty fast since they only need 8 minutes to bake.

A Few Tricks I Learned

Definitely freeze or chill the cakes before assembling them. The ears are very delicate and break easily. I ended up putting the entire pan into the freezer with the cake on it and that did the trick. It was so much easier to assemble when it was cold.

I stacked the three Pikachu cakes and filled with buttercream frosting between each cake layer. For the very top cake, I flipped the it upside down with the bottom being the top because it was smooth and perfect.

Adding Pikachu’s Face

For the facial features, I melted candy melts and put them into small piping bags. I then used a paper template that i printed from the internet to help make the face details. Once they were cool and had set up, I added them to the top of the cake. I love his winking eye – so adorable!

It turned out so cute! A pancake mold turned into a cute three-layer Pikachu cake. 💛⚡️ Look at that cutie!!
